Description
Madonna and Child
Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato (1609-1685) is an Italian Baroque painter whose works recalled 15th century painters such as Raphael and Perugino. Sassoferrato is known for his devotional paintings of the Virgin Mary and the Holy Family, which usually recur in different iterations. His painting of Madonna and Child captures the sweet, somewhat Peruginesque style that Sassoferrato brings to his religious works.
The bright blue and red colors that Madonna dons in the painting serves as a happy contrast to the somewhat melancholy expressions frequently found in the paintings of his time. Sassoferrato brings forth a sense of calm and piece with a touch of intimacy in this Madonna and Child piece.
